After Spending 7 Months At Malaysian Airport, Syrian Refugee Finally Finds Home In Canada


Hassan Al Kontar, A Syrian man who spent more than 6 months at the Kuala Lumpur Airport has landed in Canada. It took him long time to move out of Malaysia with support of many people who fought for him.

Al Kontar reached at Vancover airport on Monday night wearing a T-shirt and a pair of flip-flops. Canada has already recognised his an refugee and as soon as he reached Canada, He was given the status of permanent citizen in the country.

Al Kontar found some attention after his posts got viral on social media that showed him washing and cutting him own hari in the toilets at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport Terminal 2 and surviving on donated meals from airlines.

His 3 months Malaysian tourist visa had expired and he has been rejected a visa from UAE where he was working illegally as insurance manager even after his visa got expired and was declined to renew the new one.

Also he said Turkish Airlines did not allow him to get a seat without any explanation to his planned flight to Ecuador.

Al Kontar last went to Cambodia and then returned to Kuala Lumpur airport from there. If he would have left the premised he would risk deportation back to war zone Syria where he said he was wanted for some reason more than a decade ago.
