Due to its proximity to Reading Henley offers excellent rail links to both London and Oxford and can act as the perfect holiday base from which to explore the Oxfordshire and Royal Berkshire area, as well as a welcome oasis of calm after a busy day exploring the sights of London.

Dating back to at least 1179, Henley is a delightful little historic market town with many hidden delights to discover.  With a traditional weekly Thursday market in the heart of the town dating back to a charter from King John in the late thirteenth century, Henley is the perfect place to sample the atmosphere of a quaint but lively English market town.  For those who like a little foreign flair there is also a regular monthly French market when food artisans from across the Channel show off their delicious wares in the town’s central market place.

While the markets may be at the heart of the town, Henley is also famous for more than just its markets.  Full of history, Henley suffered at the hands of both sides in the English Civil War and briefly acted as a resting place for William III in 1668 as he made his way to London.  Also steeped in history is Henley’s iconic five arch bridge spanning the Thames, built in 1786 it still offers the most scenic views of Henley’s riverside and links the numerous rowing clubs to the town centre.

The River Thames is central to life in Henley, and as well as sporting some of Henley’s best pubs and hotels on its banks is also home to world renowned Henley Royal Regatta.  The Henley Royal Regatta is the height of the social calendar and attracts visitors from near and far for a week of festivities and entertainment.  Closely linked to the Regatta is the world famous Leander rowing club, one of the world’s oldest such clubs and proud to boast the current British Gold Medallists among its members.  If your interest in the river is a little more sedate than the hotly contested rowing contests then there is the chance to hire a motor or rowing boat to cruise up or down the Thames, or if you wish to be a little further from the water to take the larger guided boat that highlights the attractions the river has to offer.

Another popular local attraction closely linked to the river is the River and Rowing Museum, situated in a riverside park the Museum offers a fascinating exhibit on the ever popular children’s novel ‘Wind in the Willows’, based around the Henley locality.  If visitors wish to delve further into this literary connection to Henley then Toad Hall, the stately home featured in the book is just a short drive out of town.

Alongside the Regatta Henley also holds both an annual Festival of Music and Arts and a Food Festival, so it is not just rowing enthusiasts whom Henley has something to offer.

With numerous hotels and guest houses to stay in, not to mention a wealth of excellent restaurants and cosy pubs to enjoy there really is no better place to stay than Henley to sample a taste of historic England at its finest.
